Writing

This week we are going to focus on spelling. We are going to use part of the FL WS 5.
WS 5 To write new words, I can…
☐ Say words slowly, listen for the sounds, and write the sounds I hear

Below is a suggested 5 day plan for writing. Keep in mind that every child writes at a different pace. I wrote it as though a child was writing/editing/finishing one book this week. If your child finishes their writing quicker than that (perhaps they write a story on one page), have them write something new the next day and follow the steps again. We are focusing on spelling this week, but please remember that not all the spelling will look like words you find in books and that is ok. Help your child slowly stretch out words to write the sounds they hear (even if it isn’t written perfectly). For help with sounds, check out https://jackhartmann.com/pages/fun-house

Day one– Write about any topic you like. For help choosing a topic, go back to the lessons from last week. The first day is usually spent focusing on coming up with the idea, saying it out loud, sketching the picture, and then writing the words (if there is time).

Day two- Take out your writing you started yesterday. Underline any words you used from our sight words/word wall. Did you spell them all correctly? No? That’s ok- erase the mistake and fix it up. That’s what erasers are for! Once you are happy, continue adding to your picture or you writing.

Day three- Go back in your writing and see if everything looks like it is spelled correctly- even words that are not from our sight words/word wall. If not, stretch the word out really slowly and write any sounds you hear.

Day four- Go back to your writing and see if what you have done so far looks like your best work. If it is, continue writing and adding more.

Day five- Do you feel like your story is finished? Did you do your best spelling in your writing? Do you have your capitals, spaces, and punctuation? Yes?! Sounds like you have finished your writing! Congratulations!
